Abstract :
[en] While eponyms are frequently used in the LSP of physics, some of them may appear problematic because of the incoherence between the authorship and the naming of the discovery, such as the “Higgs boson”, which has been discovered by Brout, Englert and Higgs. This corpus-based study analyzes the use of the eponym “Higgs boson” in English as well as the use of the terms substituting them (“BEH boson” and “scalar boson”) and their equivalents in French in both specialized and popularized texts. It also shows the pros and cons of using eponyms in LSPs such as the language of medicine.
