[en] The purpose of this program is to get a better understanding of the behaviour of mortars. The objective is the improvement of the restoration habits, which could be usefully re-oriented in order to upgrade practices on the restoration sites and to ensure the permanence of heritage monuments. 100 historical mortars formulations have been developed for laboratory testing according to various standards. Physical properties were characterized on each composition: porosity, density, ultrasonic velocity. The mechanical properties characterization has been based on cutting tests developed at University of Mons.In parallel, mortar samples from buildings and vestiges of all periods from all over the Walloon Region have been collected and studied using the same testing techniques. The aim is to determine their mechanical properties in order to compare them with those of mortars made to the selected formulae. With the cutting characterization, our research program has the most precise and the most rigorous mechanical evaluation of historical mortars. The data base composed with the preliminary choice of 100 reference mortars, we can now propose a methodology suitable for our interventions on historical sites. The first observations have already enabled us to adapt our interventions on the restoration sites.
