Abstract :
[en] Benchmarking using artifacts is an effective and widely used method in literature for monitoring Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) processes. However, it requires a significant amount of material and time, which is a concern for industrial companies. Therefore, a time and material consumption efficient method was developed for assessing the performance of FFF printers using Component for Machine Performance Assessment in Quick Time (COMPAQT) parts. The method was applied to assess the dimensional performance in terms of systematic and random error (from ISO 5725-1), machine-to-machine variability, as well as the achievable IT grade of 9 different printers, all using Polylactic acid (PLA) filament. The impact of the feedstock selection on the method was also assessed by employing two different PLA suppliers. In addition, a verification of the method applicability to complex designs was conducted using a freeform part. The paper shows that printing two COMPAQT parts on the furthest location from the machine reference origin and measuring them using a micrometre is a reliable method. This enables the dimensional performance of FFF printers to be evaluated in 30 min, while consuming 3.56 cm3 of feedstock (4 g of PLA).
